I sat in my car, white knuckling the steering wheel, holding in tears, trying to slow breathe while holding on to as much of my sanity as possible—for as long as possible.
Have you ever been there? That moment when life hurls an unexpected curveball your way, and suddenly, the world tilts off its axis? Your chest tightens, your heart races, and the weight of anxiety threatens to crush you. You try to apply logic, but fear clings stubbornly. It’s as if your mind has become a storm, and you’re caught in the eye of it.
For me, this anxiety paralysis has been a lifelong companion — a shadow that stretches across three decades. Situations that should feel manageable morph into category 5 hurricanes in my mind. But here’s the twist: the hurricane often exists only in my head. It’s a vivid movie playing on repeat, complete with believable scenes and gripping emotions. Yet, it might bear little resemblance to the real-life situation unfolding around me. Which is real mind F my friends.
The Battle Within
To the outside world, I might appear irrational. They see a person wrestling with invisible demons, reacting disproportionately to everyday challenges. But inside, my head and heart wage a fierce battle — one that outsiders can’t fully comprehend. It’s like standing on the edge of a cliff, knowing that the fall is both imminent and imagined (The Matrix anyone?).
The Silent Struggle
Why do we stay silent about this? Why do we hesitate to share our mental issues — the storms brewing between our ears and behind our eyes? Perhaps it’s because we fear judgment, rejection, or the dreaded label of “overreacting.” So, we white-knuckle our way through life, hoping no one notices the hurricane raging within.
But it’s time to break the silence.
Let’s Talk About It
Naming the Storms: Acknowledgment is the first step. Let’s name our hurricanes—whether they’re anxiety, depression, or any other mental health challenge. By giving them a voice, we strip away their power.
The Logic Trap: We often believe that logic alone can dismantle the storm. But anxiety doesn’t always play by the rules. It thrives on uncertainty and irrationality. So, let’s stop blaming ourselves for not “thinking straight.”
The Movie in Our Minds: That vivid mental movie? It’s time to hit pause. Let’s question its plot, its characters, and its ending. Is it a documentary or a work of fiction? Sometimes, the truth lies in the gaps between scenes.
Compassion, Not Judgment: When someone shares their mental weather report, let’s respond with empathy. Judgment only adds thunder to their storm. Instead, offer an umbrella of understanding.
Your Story Matters
This blog is for you. A place where we can unravel the knots of anxiety, untangle the threads of depression, and find solace in shared vulnerability. Because when we break the silence, we create a safe harbor — a place where hurricanes lose their fury and whispers become shouts.
The truth of your situation isn’t always what your mind paints, and sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is say, “I’m struggling.”
